caissons - watertight chambers used for construction work under water or a foundation

cantilever - a beam that projects out which is supported only at one end

cardinal directions - the four points on a compass (north, south, east and west)

carpenter - a person who builds and works with wood

caryatid - a supporting column carved to look like a figure

cathedral - the home church of the bishop who leads the area’s churches

causes - something or someone that produces the symptoms

classical - related to the architecture of the ancient Greeks and Romans

client - a person who hires someone with professional skills for advice or assistance

colonnade - a row of columns holding up one side of a porch roof

column - a vertical structural element that supports a load

compression - a force that squeezes or presses material together

coordinate grid - a grid labeled with numbers on the bottom and side to help locate points on the grid

cornerstone - a large stone in the bottom corner of a building often carved with the date of the building and laid in a special ceremony

crane operator - person who runs the crane that lifts heavy building parts

cupola - a small dome with windows on top of the building
